Lylat ul Qadr

Lylat ul Qadr; The night of power

What is Lylat ul Qadr?

As this is the month of Ramadan, which is called the spring season of doing good deeds, and we are being blessed with a lot of rewards, mercy, and generosity by the creator of this world, Allah Almighty, how can we forget about the lylat ul qadr, the holiest night of the month of Ramadan? Lylat ul Qadar, or the night of power, is a night in the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan on which Allah Almighty revealed the holy Quran to the Prophet(pbuh).

It is also revealed in the Holy Quran:

“We have, indeed, revealed this message in the Night of Power.” (Surah Qadr.1)

The exact date of Laylatul Qadr is not specified in the Quran or Hadith, but it is believed to occur in one of the last ten nights of the Islamic month of Ramadan, with odd-numbered nights being more likely (i.e., 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night).

Hazrat Ayesha (r.a) narrates the Holy Prophet saying:

“Search for Lylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.” (Bukhari,2017)

However, it is important to note that the exact date of Laylatul Qadr is ultimately known only to Allah, and sincere efforts to seek it out should be made throughout the last ten nights of Ramadan.

Lylat ul Qadar meaning:

Lylat ul Qadr is a combination of two Arabic words, “Lylatul” and “qadr.” Lylatul means “the night,” and Qadr means “power.” It is also referred to as “Shab e Qadr,” the night of power,” “the night of decree,” and “the night of destiny” because, this is the night when human fate and decree are also decided.

As Allah says in the Quran:

“Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [humankind]. On that night is made distinct every precise matter. (Every) matter (proceeding) from us. Indeed, we were to send ( a messenger) ”. (Sorah Ad-Dukhaan.3-5)

The Night of Power

Muslims are encouraged to seek this night out by engaging in increased worship and remembrance of Allah during the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially during the last five odd-numbered nights. It is believed that by doing so, one may have a higher chance of experiencing the blessings and rewards of Laylatul Qadr.

All the Muslims offer special prayer, or ibadah, on this night, as according to the Holy Quran, this holy night is better than a thousand months, and the reward of worship, offering special prayers, and supplications on this night is equal to the worship and prayers of a thousand months.

As Allah Almighty announces in the Holy Quran:

“The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.” (Sorah Qadr.2)

Shab e Qadr in the Quran:

Allah Almighty has sent a whole surah in the Quran named “Surah Qadr,” in which He describes the importance and significance of this night.

“Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace is until the emergence of dawn.” [ Surah Qadr:1-5]

Lylat ul Qadr in Hadith:

According to the Holy Prophet’s(pbuh) saying:

“Whoever prays on Laylat ul Qadr out of faith and sincerity, shall have all their past sins forgiven.”( Bukhari-35)

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:

“When the third Ashra( last 10 days) of Ramadan starts, the Holy Prophet (pbuh) used to tighten his waist belt (i.e.work harder) and used to pray the whole night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers”. (Bukhari.2024)
